HCPS and partners team up for STEM
A hospital is a place where doctors and nurses take care of sick people, but those particular jobs are just a very small part of the overall hospital community. Healthy KIDZ is providing a glimpse into the vast world of healthcare-related careers. At Moffitt Cancer Center, the mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. To help the cancer center live its mission are more than 4,500 team members, including some of the best and brightest minds from around the world. Many of these team members are doctors and nurses, but there are hundreds of other people in jobs that are essential to Moffitt fulfilling its mission. The Hillsborough Education Foundation has partnered with Moffitt in a joint effort to provide students greater access to Moffitt’s infrastructure, team member base, and exposure to healthcare related careers. Moffitt is a strong supporter and sponsor of the Foundation's annual Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair, and both HEF and Moffitt hope to strengthen their partnership by providing year-round opportunities for students through the Healthy KIDZ program.
Here is just a partial list of the vast number of employment areas at Moffitt:
- Administrative & Clerical Support
- Nursing & Patient Care Services
- Certified Medical Assistant
- General Facilities
- Legal/General Counsel (Lawyers)
- Nutrition and Food Services
- Security Services
- Business & Information Technology
According to Nikki Ross-Inda, Community Relations Coordinator for Moffitt, “the Healthy KIDZ program helps support Moffitt’s mission and that starts with cancer prevention.” She further states that, “Moffitt’s team members feel very strongly about the importance of health education beginning at a young age." Part of that education is providing insight into what health career options are available in both clinical and non-clinical areas. Moffitt Healthy KIDZ hosts high school students several times a year. Those students may be part of other career awareness programs from around the Tampa Bay area, members of the Health Professions Summer Academy at USF, or enrolled in a healthcare/medical program in one of the local middle or high schools. Students in these groups are seeking information about the college preparation skills they will need to go into the medical and/or a related field, and that’s where Moffitt steps in with visits and tours throughout the facility, and personal presentations by a host of Moffitt team members.
