HCPS Educators Held Inaugural International Men’s Day Summit at Jennings Middle School
April Cobb, Team Leader/Math Instructor and Antonio Hawkins, ESE Resource Teacher at Jennings Middle School created an Inaugural International Men's Day Summit on November 18th at Jennings Middle School. With help from Jennings SGA members, the event focused on men's and boy's health, developing and understanding the importance of healthy relationships, and highlighting positive male role models in our community.
For its first year, the event had a wonderful turnout with six speakers and 42 boys and young men— a majority of the students from RTI schools in Hillsborough County. The goal was to focus on students from the inner city and build community relationships. This was an opportunity for everyone to collaborate in order to provide support, resources and mentors for these students.
The day was filled with guest panelists from the community with discussions on topics ranging from male achievements and contributions to the community, family, wellness, and mental health.
The effort to put this event and partnership together did not go unnoticed, the Tampa City Council presented April and Antonio with a Commendation to honor the International Men's Day in Tampa. The recognition and celebration of the men and boys will touch the lives in our community and beyond.
Their next event at Jennings Middle School is planned for June 16, 2018, called Blueprint for Boys, to support inner city students who do not have a male figure in the home. They are also planning the same event for girls on March 17, 2018. The events are open to all Hillsborough County students and the community as a whole.
