Magnet programs shine at National MSA Conference
Hillsborough County Public Schools’ magnet programs were shining stars at the 2016 National Magnet Schools of America (MSA) Conference in Miami. Muller Elementary Magnet School and Riverhills Elementary Magnet School both brought home top national merit awards. The Magnet School of America Merit Awards recognize member magnet schools/programs that demonstrate a high commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs, and parent and community involvement. This year, 371 schools applied for national merit awards making 2016 the most competitive year in the award program’s history.
Muller Elementary School received the Donald R. Waltrip Magnet School Merit Award of Excellence, which is named for MSA’s first Executive Director. In March, Muller was named a Magnet School of Excellence and, as one of the highest ranked in the Excellence category, became eligible to receive a monetary award and the chance to be named the nation’s top elementary school. At Muller Elementary School, the magnet theme focuses on arts and environmental studies. Students at Muller experience the arts and the environment through visual arts, dance, musical theater, strings, and gardening. Community partnerships with arts organizations, businesses, and universities foster real-world applications of the arts and environmental sciences.
Riverhills Elementary Magnet School received the New & Emerging Magnet School of Merit Award sponsored by Hogan Lovells, LLC. The New & Emerging School award is awarded to a magnet school that is in their second or third year of program implementation. At Riverhills Elementary, a newly authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), students develop a broad-based knowledge of global issues and become critical thinkers. As the district’s fourth International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, Riverhills Elementary students are guided by the PYP curriculum that focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.View Full Album
