Local Students Benefit from Bike Giveaway
The entire first-grade class at Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary School got the surprise of their lives on Thursday May 26 when they were each given a brand new bicycle.
The bikes were donated by the CAN’d Aid Foundation, an organization that focuses on finding ways to “do-good” throughout the United States. The Foundation’s program, Bike Build, partners with local communities to build brand new bikes for low-income children. In Tampa, the group worked with volunteers and employees at the Cigar City Brewing Company. The group built 101 bikes for the students at Tampa Bay Boulevard. Each student also received a new helmet to go along with their bike.
Glenda Rodriguez, principal at the Title 1 elementary school, said she is grateful for the donation and the chance to encourage bike safety with her students.
“It’s great to have the chance to promote bike safety and healthy living with our kids,” Rodriguez said. “It’s really exciting.”
Partnering with CAN'd Aid and Cigar City Brewing, a nationally certified bike friendly business, is part of the School District’s initiative to increase awareness of safe transportation alternatives for students.
School Board Chair Cindy Stuart, serves as the chair of Hillsborough County’s School Transportation Working Group. She said events like this teach students about safety in a fun way.
“We welcome every opportunity to share safe transportation alternatives with our parents and students,” Stuart said. “The safety of every student is important to us and we are always eager for the chance to be a part of the conversation.”
Along with their new bikes and helmets, students also got the chance to meet Jeff Lenoksy, a world-class professional freeride and trials mountainbike rider. He treated students to an exciting bike demonstration and then provided bike safety information.View Full Album
