The School Choice and Magnet School Application Deadline is Quickly Approaching
The Magnet School and School Choice application deadline is quickly approaching. Parents, don’t let your children miss out on the opportunity to pave the way to their future. With over 40 Magnet programs in Hillsborough County there is something for everyone, regardless of where you live in the county.
The School Choice and Magnet School Application period ends on December 12 for Elementary, Middle and High School, with the Elementary application period reopening from January 10 – January 31, 2018.
Magnet programs are available in elementary, middle, and high schools, with a theme-based curriculum offering innovative and rigorous academic instruction by trained educators in smaller learning enviornments. Some of the Magnet school themes you will find in Hillsborough County include: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Fine and Performing Arts, International Baccalaureate, International Studies, Career and Technical Education (CTE) and World Languages.
Magnet schools are free to attend, and welcome students from all backgrounds, socio-economic backgrounds and academic levels. Magnet schools are providing real-life preparation with hands-on experience working with our local companies, colleges and organizations.
So what exactly is School Choice? It’s an option that provides parents and legal guardians with children entering grades K-11 the opportunity to choose three non-magnet schools or Career & Technical Education programs. Parents may choose from a list of schools with space available.
Hillsborough County Public Schools also provides CTE Attractor programs. Learn about the programs available before applying. Both the middle and high school level students must meet proficiency in either Math or Reading on standardized test scores to be considered for an offer.
Once applications are submitted, there is a lottery system held to determine who will be enrolled in each school. All high school magnet applications are entered into a competitive selection process for each program. Tampa Bay Technical High School has a separate application process to apply for their technical programs: School Application. To learn more about Tampa Bay Technical High School’s process and programs tour their campus on Thursday, November 30 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Lalique Watson, an eighth grader at Slight Middle Magnet School, hopes to attend Tampa Bay Technical High School so that she can continue her hands-on experience in their medical programs, and accomplish her plan of becoming a neurosurgeon.
“I enjoy attending Magnet schools because it really focuses on what I want to do when I grow up,” said Lalique.
Families will be notified via email and phone of the results this spring.
